Just a quick little rant about a personal pet-peeve of mine.
I often browse the DA Resources categories for new brushes, textures, shapes, and other such things to bulk up my library of things that will make life easier in Photoshop. I always read the rules tagged on the things I download, and try to stick to them to the best of my ability. And theres a few variations of a few rules that people like to post, that really just irritate me when I find something nice, that people put up as a free resource. Usually, when people post up these rules, I don't even bother with their pack of whatever because its a bit ridiculous to me.
- For use on DA only.
- Do not post outside of DA.
- You must credit me in your image description.
- You must link me to what you've used it on.
I fully understand the desire to be credited for the work they have done to make these resources. I have a Resource section in my favorites where all of the brushes and patterns I download that ask for SOME KIND OF CREDIT (not specifically in the image description) are kept, so other people can find them. But, I'm not going to do much more than that. I'm sorry but if I am going to download your pack, it is because I plan on USING IT. This does not mean I am going to make one single image and then never touch the shit again, it means its going to be integrated into my every day use of Photoshop and become a regular tool in my work. I do NOT have the time or brain power to remember every single time I use something to keep track of where all of these things came from, and link to ALL of them in my desc ( I often use multiple textures, many brushes ) AND link to EACH of these people the thing I have made where they MIGHT see a hint of their brush or texture layered in there somewhere. And as for posting on DA only? Sorry, no thanks, I share my work in multiple places.
Then, to top some of these things off, most of them never have a pay-to-use option anywhere. In some cases, a pack was so good looking I would have been willing to pay them to use it without having to follow all of these stupid rules - at a reasonable price! Of course, this happens often with packs that specially state "not for commercial use" which means I cannot use them on commissioned work ( or so it seems? ) - and again, no option for those who do wish to do so. Its their choice though, I just wish more people would think of options!
But, like I said, when people have these rules I simply do not download and use them, and I move on. I just kind of felt like ranting about it now, because I have just come across it so many times over the years, I cannot help but wonder if anyone else finds this as weird and limiting as I do. I have not made many free resources myself, aside from the PSD Commission Layout. To me, if you're going to make a resource and make it "FREE FOR USE OMG!!" then make it free, and let people express their art with it and share that expression however they see fit. If you care so much about who is going to do what with the things you post on DA, I have a newsflash for you: Many people probably completely ignore those rules you have posted, and you will never be able to keep track of it all anyways. Its a lot easier on yourself and your audience to just get rid of such specific ruling, imo.
Anyways, I'm done babbling! People can keep putting these regulations on their stuff and I won't lose any sleep over it, I'll just keep skipping over their work for someone elses.
